Vice Admiral Radhakrishin Hariram Tahiliani took over as Chief of the Naval Staff on 01 Dec 1984.
Born on May 12, 1930, Admiral, Tahiliani was commissioned on September 1, 1950 and belongs to the Naval aviation branch. A qualified test pilot, his major commands at sea include INS Trishul and the aircraft carrier, INS Vikrant.
On elevation to the rank of Rear Admiral in December 1977, Admiral Tahiliani was Flag Officer Goa Area and later Flag Officer Commanding Western Fleet. Subsequently, he served in Naval Headquarters as Assistant Chief of Naval Staff and Deputy Chief of Naval Staff and was the first incumbent when the latter post was elevated to that of a Vice Admiral.
In February 1982, Admiral Tahiliani was appointed Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief (FOC-IN-C) Southern Naval Command. In March 1983, he was appointed as FOC-in-C, Western Naval Command and served in this capacity for a year, till he was appointed Vice Chief of Naval Staff in May 1984. Admiral Tahiliani has the rare distinction of having been the FOC-IN-C of two Naval Commands.
Admiral Tahiliani is a graduate of the Naval War College, USA and the National Defence College, New Delhi. He is a recipient of the Param Vashisht Seva Medal and Ati Vishisht Seva Medal for his distinguished service.
