The history of the building and growth of the royal Indian Naval Barracks, more familiarity known as "CASTLE BARRACKS", and the premier and widely known R.I.N. establishment in Mumbai makes very interesting reading.
It is situated behind the present Town Hall and between the Mint and Old Custom House.
In 1534 the island the island of Mumbai was ceded to the Portuguese by the Sultan Bahadur of Gujarat and in 1548 it was gifted by the King of Portugal to GARCIA de ORTA (1495-1570), an eminent physician of the period who built the QUINTA or Manor House in the Castle.
In 1626, the Castle was described by David Davies, the English Navigator as a Warhouse, priory and a foot containing a square house for the residence of the Portuguese Governor.
In 1661, it passed to His Majesty King Charles II as part of the dowry of his Queen the Infanta Cantherine of Portugal.
The English took possession of the Island on18 February 1665 and it was in the Manor House of the Castle that Humphry Cook signed the instrument of possession.
In 1663 it was granted by Charles II to the Honourable East India Company who took possession on 23 September 1668.
The seat of the Honourable Companys Government was transferred in 1663 from Surat to Mumbai Castle, which thus became the Headquarters of the Mumbai Marine, the precursor to the present Indian Navy.
The same Mumbai Castle is presently known as Naval Barracks. The commodore Naval Barracks (COMBRAX), is also the commanding Officer, of INS Angre, the major Naval shore establishment in Mumbai, situated in Naval Barracks.
